A new year always brings in new trends in the world of colours. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to repaint your interior walls, it’s a precious moment to observe how colours reflect the state of the world in which they exist, to discover new shades and embrace unexpected colour combinations.

Colour in interior design, like in fashion, has always told a lot about our society and the historical moment we’re living in. From the pink glassware of America’s Great Depression to the pastel colours of the post-war boom, from the clashing colours of the peace-and-love 1960s to the earthy tones of the 1970s, the bold hues of the maximalist 1980s and the beige palettes of the minimalist 1990s, colour is more than just colour: it’s an instrument to respond to the issues of our time and to express the way we, as a society, feel.
With no surprise, the adoption of bold hues has often be the response to the darkest moment of the history – the world wars, the depressions, the pandemic. So today, while we’re trying our best to go through a global crisis, colour is here to stay. However, compared to the previous years, it is now embracing deeper, richer, enveloping and more nostalgic shades: we now feel the need to be surrounded by hues that give us a sense of calmness, comfort, protection and luxe. Contrasts, especially between dark and bright shades, are welcomed to bring interest to the room, injecting sparkles of optimism and reflecting our wish to overcome the darkness of these difficult times.
Let’s have a look to some of the shades you will mostly see this year:
